Eloping: Celebrating the Love Between You and Your Partner

When most people hear the word wedding they picture an extravagant day surrounded by many of their friends and family. However, with COVID the unknown has become a stressful time for many during the wedding planning process. Many couples are choosing to elope, allowing them to focus their celebration solely on each other.

Eloping isn’t for everyone, but for many, it can help alleviate the stress and hardships that come with wedding planning. I love photographing a wedding with over 100 people just as much as I love capturing moments from a small intimate elopement. If you have been thinking about eloping keep reading for the top five reasons why (or why not) you should choose to elope.

No Anxiety on Performance

When it comes to a wedding there is one thing that is inevitable, you will be professing your love for one another in front of an audience. This brings out stress for many couples as they might be shy, don’t like public speaking, or don’t want to share their feelings with anyone but their partner. There is definitely added pressure to a wedding day knowing that when you speak your vows all eyes will be on you.

Choosing to elope means that you and your loved one will have an authentic experience allowing you to soak in every moment. There will be no pressure around the words that you are saying, if you mess up a sentence, or if you aren’t talking loud enough. It allows you and your partner to enjoy every moment from start to finish.

You can make the day as long or as short as you’d like.

There is often a saying with weddings that the day goes by so quickly. From starting hair and makeup at 9 AM to your sparkler exit at 10 PM, the day comes and goes in the blink of an eye. For some, this can provide a long day and add to the stress they are already feeling of everything going perfectly.

One thing that is unique about eloping is that you and your partner are in charge of the schedule entirely. Maybe you want to sleep in on your wedding day and grab brunch before you hit the alter. Others may want to go on a hike up a mountain before saying “I do” at the peak.

Whatever it may be, by choosing to elope you are in charge of your schedule and what time you want everything to happen. There is no stress about making sure you are in a certain place at a certain time.

Eloping is Less Stressful

By the time some couples get to their wedding day, they’re sometimes so overwhelmed by the wedding planning process that it takes a toll on their relationship. Many couples put a focus on pleasing family members and conforming to traditions that don’t mean anything to them.

When it comes down to it when you have a big, traditional wedding, you’re playing host to the biggest party of your life and it’s not about you at all. By choosing to elope, you can really focus on the things that matter - your own hearts and minds.

Elope and Save Money

There is no denying, weddings are pricey. The average cost of planning a wedding in 2022 is….. $24,000! Let that sink in for a second. From venue fees, providing dinner, a DJ, and more the cost can add up quickly. Many individuals are already facing financial hardship, a struggling job market, and the rising cost of living. For some, it is just not feasible to spend that much, and others may not see the urge to. More money doesn’t equate to more romance on your wedding day, often it can just complicate things and add stress.

It is no shock that elopements are significantly cheaper than planning a big wedding. Realistically, all you need to elope is a marriage license and (depending on where you live/elope) someone to officiate and marry you. That’s it!

Of course, you can always add to eloping with fancier outfits, or the bonus of bringing along a photographer to capture the special moments from the day. Whatever it may be, eloping allows you to pick and choose what you want to spend on and what you don’t.

Focus on why you are getting married in the first place.

The number one reason why many people choose to elope is they want the day to themselves to celebrate each other. There is something so intimate about allowing your wedding day to be all about the two of you and the love you have committed to building.

There is no pressure, anxiety, or stress because you are focusing on the reason why you chose to get married to each other. Ultimately, the day is about the two of you, and eloping gives you the freedom to have the magical, romantic day that truly is all about you.
